Europe’s first eight-apartment complex powered by remote solar energy was planned for the new zoning area of Ilokkaanpuisto in Koivistonkylä, Tampere. The Ilokkaanpuisto remote solar power plant is located in Teisko, Tampere.
The location of the block in Ahlman’s old fields, between a small housing estate and a forest, guided the design: the forest at the southern edge of the plot encourages taller buildings, but with the building masses sloping down towards the north neighbouring plot, where single-storey terraced houses are located. The north-south orientation of the buildings supports energy-efficient construction, while deliberate building mass reversals and angles capture the older building fabric of the area.
Following the zoning process, our office has designed six of the eight apartment buildings in the area, which are four and six storeys high. There will be 202 apartments in total, 28 to 40 per building. The average size of the apartments per building varies between 39 and 62 m2. The buildings form four housing associations.
The dark colour of the main facades embeds the buildings in the forest background, while the lighter, variegated facades are a nod to the older building stock in the area. The main living areas of each apartment open out to favourable breezes, while bright glazed balconies add to the living comfort.
The combination of the buildings’ colours, the beveling of the end walls, the loft landscape and the gable roof create a charming ensemble that takes its inspiration from the area’s architectural history and combines them in a modern way.
