Oulu Lyseo High School is a valuable part of the nationally significant cultural environment. The property is located in a central area of great urban significance.

The building was designed by Carl Ludvig Engel for the Oulu Trivial School and completed in 1831. The school was extended in 1875 according to plans by architects Axel Hampus Dahlström and Florentin Granholm. The extension, which included a ballroom, was designed by architect W.A. Tötterström in 1899. The gymnasium building on the Kajaaninkatu side was designed by architect Theodor Granstedt in 1907. The extension on Linnankatu was designed by architect Yrjö Sadeniemi in 1934.

The design of the project was launched in a competitive phase and was carried out as a collaborative SR contract. As a result of winning the competition, we were able to design a comprehensive renovation and modification plan for the site. The renovation that was carried out has a strong conservation character. The building will continue to serve as a high school.

The changes were mainly based on improving accessibility and increasing the number of toilets and dining facilities. The building services were completely renewed. The facades were renovated respecting the existing architecture and materials. The new small extension was designed to be transparent and linear so as not to disturb the character of the existing courtyard building.

The Lyseo High School property is located in a central urban archaeological site. The site has been designed in accordance with the law on antiquities and all archaeological sites are protected and taken into account in the design. During the planning process, there has been close cooperation with the town planning department, the Museum of Northern Ostrobothnia, the National Board of Antiquities, the city authorities and the user. The site is protected by a town plan.
