Renovation and restoration of a protected building.
Renovation and change of use of a commercial and residential building on Kauppakatu in Tampere, where the renovation work included a hotel and restaurant. The building is of architectural and cultural heritage value and is important for the preservation of the urban landscape. The building was originally designed by Vilho Penttilä and Bertel Strömmer. The oldest part of the building, facing Kauppakatu, was completed in 1910 and extended in 1917 and 1954.
The renovation work was carried out with the aim of designing the premises in keeping with the spirit of the original and to meet modern requirements. The vaulted ceiling of the banking hall, the large light fitting, the copper belts on the tops of the circular pillars and the mural done by Alanen are all that remain of the original interior and design language. The original mosaic concrete surface and steel railing can also be seen on the B staircase. These original elements have been preserved in the renovation.
The building is protected by a zoning plan.
