The old Tavara-asema (Cargo station) from 1907 is a brick-built office building, to which cold cargo shelters and storages of wooden and steel structures from various eras used to be attached. The original use ended after the compitition of Viinikka railway area, but the office part has been preserved. Also the complete renovation of the residential building for the railway workers next to the station is part of project.
Tavara-asema was saved from demolition mostly because of the popular movement and both station and the residential building are protected by the local urban area development plan. The Tavara-asema caused a turn in the Ratapihankatu, which again caused traffic jams in the Tampere city center. Because of this, the building was decided to be moved by 28 meters. The moving of the station in 2020 was challenging and it was prepared by deconstructing most of the inside spaces. Also the floor and ceiling structures were dissembled. The foundation structures of the building were replaced by a movable concrete basis.
After having moved the building, the actual renovation could begun. The high 1-floor part was renovated into a concert hall. Moreover, a loft balcony was built along the outer walls of this part of the station. The maximun amount of people simultaneously in the building is 1300 and 400 on the inner balcony. The high part of building includes backstage spaces for the performers, supporting and storage spaces and technical spaces for HVAC.
The colour of the plastering in the facades was returned into the original light brown. The shade that was there before the green that was there fore decades was found via old photographs.
