Architectural competition victory, zoning plan reference design.

In 2016, TOAS organised a planning competition for the Hipposkortteli area, previously a government office building site. Our proposal, Kannel, was selected as the winner of the competition.

Based on the winning proposal, the process of amending the zoning plan began to transform the office block into a block for student housing and commercial buildings. In the reference design, efforts were made to preserve the spirit of the competition solution, which featured a protective, irregular wall-like structure against noise, and a winding, human-scale block courtyard in the interior. Additionally, the conceptual solution was adapted to the proportions of the surrounding nationally significant built environment.

During the process, collaboration was carried out with TOAS, Fira, and educational institutions through workshops and student surveys related to student housing typologies, preferred apartment sizes, the use of common areas, desired services within the block, and more.

The Hipposkortteli project is the largest construction in TOAS’s history and has become a flagship project, shaping TOAS’s image. The work continues with the implementation of Hipposkortteli as an alliance project, where we are involved as the main and architectural designers.
