The comprehensive master planning and reference designs for three zoning areas in the Niemenranta area.
Comprehensive master planning from 2006 to 2009
1st zoning plan, western area from 2010 to 2011, covering 60,000 square meters,
2nd zoning plan, central area from 2011 to 2013, covering 90,000 square meters,
3rd zoning plan, eastern area from 2016 to 2019, covering 140,000 square meters.
Planning of a block and building designs to establish the zoning plan. Notable features of the area include proximity to Lake Näsijärvi, lake views, a forested hill in the centre of the area, and shared waterfront areas with many possibilities. The area was designed to rely on public transportation and be seamlessly integrated with the natural environment, with the goal of maximising lake views from as many apartments as possible.
The strong influence of the timber industry, from the 19th century to the 21st century, has given the area a distinctive and unique identity. The history of construction in the area dates back to the 16th century, when Niemen Manor was established, continuing through the 18th-century tax-exempt farms and the start of Niemen Saha sawmill operations in the 1880s. In 1916, JW Enqvist’s pulp mill operations began in the area, resulting in the construction of several buildings and complexes designed by Birger Federley.
Efforts were made to create controlled complexes in different sub-areas while respecting cultural and architectural heritage values to form a new sense of identity for the area. Niemenranta has evolved into a comfortable and popular residential area, offering plenty of recreational opportunities, natural elements, and valuable protected cultural heritage.
