Sähkötalo Project is a part of the first phase of the facilities programme of the University of Tampere. The Space Need Study Phase of Sähkötalo was completed in fall 2021 and after that, the Project Planning Phase in fall 2022. The Proposal and General Planning Phase was completed in fall 2023, soon after which the Execution Planning for the first construction phases will begin. The project is carried out in phases between 2024 and 2027 as a co-creation process.

The functions of experimental research in the technical faculties are combined into the new establishment of the Sähkötalo Research Hub. Currently, the research functions are scattered in different buildings and campuses and most of these laboratories are in the need of renovation and udpating. The laboratory functions of three faculties are brought together into a science center that meets the needs of the modern science, as well as the safety requirements.

The university has made significant investments in Sähkötalo also before, such as the clean laboratories and Microscopy Center, which is why it is seen as natural development to collect the spaces for experimental research precisely in Sähkötalo. In addition, what also supports the choice, is the fact that the building is in a condition that requires renovation. Through complete renovation and the new construction, Sähkötalo will be a shared center for the experimental research of the technical fields of study, similarly to the functions of the medical research in Kauppi campus.

Technical, functional, spacial and cost-related synergies are pursued by this comprehensive development of the building. By finding these synergies, costs of the construction and, in the long term, resources are saved. Moreover, multi-field, high quality research is achieved.
