Linna is a building at the University of Tampere housing the main library of the university and most of the departments of the Faculty of Social Sciences. The building is connected to the university through an underground passage, which was constructed during the project’s building phase.

Linna has six above-ground floors and three floors either entirely or partially underground. On the Kalevantie street level, you’ll find the main entrance to the library, the Taju science bookstore, and a student cafeteria. The second and third floors house the main library’s spaces, while the three uppermost floors are used by various departments of the Faculty of Social Sciences. On the lower Pinninkatu street level, there are university lecture halls, teaching spaces, and lobby areas.

The design of the main library takes into account the requirements of a research library, necessitating flexible and adaptable spaces. Options for self-service use were also improved. The quiet study room on the second floor of Linna is open 24/7. The building was named “Linna” by the University of Tampere Support Foundation’s board in honour of the renowned Finnish author and honourary doctor of the university, Väinö Linna, who came from Tampere.
